Technology Share Funds

Where do you go to buy and sell your high-technology shares? It’s an interesting question, because the right answer will often take you right outside the conventional orbit of what we think of as a stock exchange. Traditional stock exchanges are all very well, but they tend to be middle-of-the-road affairs with lots of long-term investors - whereas what you’re looking for are fast-lane businesses that will happily risk the occasional crash for the sake of overall performance.

The typical investor in these tech markets is more trigger-happy, much more likely to trade very frequently, and much more attentive to the daily ups and downs on his computer screen. If he decides to sell his stocks at 15.45, he doesn’t want to wait till 15.59 to complete the transaction, as he would certainly have to do in any of the major conventional exchanges. (Assuming, of course, that he could find any buyers at all for what might be a very small and thinly-traded stock.) In short, the whole liquidity base that a tech stock investor looks for is a lot more specialised than you’d find in a conventional exchange.

Technology Share Funds - Nasdaq

In the US you’re most likely to be directed toward Nasdaq, the automated quotation system which in recent years has become a real rival to the New York Stock Exchange, and which has built up a predominance in fast-moving tech stocks. In Britain you’ll probably find yourself exploring the many delights of TechMark, the London Stock Exchange vehicle which groups not just new technology-based companies, but a great many older ones as well.

Technology Share Funds & France

In France or Belgium you’ll want to concentrate on Easdaq, a sort of European equivalent of Nasdaq, which is especially heavy on telecommunications and biotechnology. Elsewhere in Europe you’re more likely to be attracted to Euro.nm, a five-country confederation founded in 1998 that links Frankfurt’s Neuer Markt, France’s Nouveau MarchÈ, Milan’s Nuovo Mercato, and two special Euro.nm markets in Brussels and Amsterdam. In most cases you’ll be directed toward the high-tech investment funds which will spread your risks. Don’t be tempted to bet your all on a single company - it may be the worst mistake you ever make.
